Company brings dignity to schoolgirls

To prevent girls from being absent or dropping out of school, Imerys SA, a French multinational company and the Peace Agency provided packs of washable and reusable sanitary products to girls in need living in the Greater Tubatse district

BURGERSFORT – To prevent girls from being absent or dropping out of school, Imerys SA, a French multinational company and the Peace Agency provided packs of washable and reusable sanitary products to girls in need living in the Greater Tubatse district.

Project Dignity travelled on November 10 from Kwazulu-Natal to Tubatse to distribute these products. They visited Kanama Secondary School in Ga-Malepe Village, Manawe High School in Maakubu Village and Madikoloshe Secondary School in Praktiseer. The locally produced Subz sanitary hamper which was distributed, costs R130 each to produce and the sanitary product has a three-year lifespan.

“More than 60 per cent of girls in our country stay away from school for up to a week during their monthly cycle. Over the course of a girl’s five-year high school career she could miss over a year and a half of school. This has devastating long-term consequences and affects the girls’ capacity to successfully complete their education. It is a problem easily solved by providing quality sanitary products. Project Dignity will also help improve the girl’s self-esteem,” says Xolisa Mvinjelwa, Imerys’ executive director.
