Communities threaten to restart strike if no bail is granted

STEELPOORT – After the court case on Thursday in Schonoord Magistrate Court the community members, yet again did not receive any bail. The case is currently proceeding and communities are hoping for a positive outcome otherwise they will restart the strike.

According to a source 17 accused community members from Ngwaabe, Phasha,Mampuru and Tukakgomo appeared yesterday in court on charges for malicious damage to property during the strike. They were denied bail and the case was postponed until today.

Cllr Ephraim Hlatswayo, spokesman for the communities is part of the 17 accused community members that are still in custody.

“Another 8 community members will appear in the Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court on December 21 also on charges for malicious damage to property,” added the source.

Mr Cisco Mohloki, one of the community representatives from Longtill said that they are currently at the Schonoord Magistrate Court as they are waiting for the case to continue. “We feel positive that they will receive bail today, but if they are not released all hell will break loose. We will restart the strike from Steelpoort onwards to Burgersfort”.

No strike incidents were reported and the police are monitoring the R555. The Steelburger/Lydenburg Newspaper will keep readers updated as the case continues.
