MEC: Mpumalanga schools should be free of crime
As part of the Back to School Programme learners were also warned to avoid being distracted from their school work by vices.
MBOMBELA – Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Mr Vusi Shongwe says in order for effective learning and teaching to take place, schools should be free of crime.
He says learners should be disciplined and be at school on time so that they are able to perform well academically.
The MEC visited schools last week, when the academic year kicked off as part of the annual Back to School Programme run by the Department of Education.
Shongwe encouraged learners to also stay away from drugs and alcohol.
“Do not let alcohol and drugs distract you from your studies.
“You should listen to your parents and teachers and focus on your studies so that you can become future community builders.”
He has bemoaned the growing incidence of teenage pregnancies, saying children should abstain from sexual activity to prevent it adversely affecting their futures.
He has added that the department will continue to work with SAPS on various campaigns to ensure crime is eradicated in schools.
