Four women tricked and robbed by job scammers

Four incidents where women were tricked and robbed by men offering bogus jobs were reported in White River recently.

Members of the community should be wary when job hunting as four women were recently robbed and tricked in four seperate incidents by a group of men who offered them jobs.

White River SAPS Communication officer WO Gugulethu Phiri says it seems like the suspects target and make contact with females by inviting them to interviews or offering them jobs.

A meeting place is apparently then set and the women are taken to an isolated area where they are robbed of cash, bank cards, clothing and cellphones. In one case a woman was allegedly raped.

“We strongly appeal to the community not to accept job offers from strangers when approached. People should also verify the credentials of the company names used to see if it exists or request some form of identification and or documentation when approached, to check the legitimacy of the offer,” Phiri stated.

To avoid falling victim to job scams:
• Arrange a meeting at a neutral but populated location such as a coffee shop or restaurant
• If meeting at the business premises, find out what the area is like and let your friends and family know where you’re going.
• Look the business up on the internet, visit their website or ask around whether anyone knows about it
• Never give money to any person that demands you pay them in order to apply for a job
• Never hand over personal information beyond a cellphone number or email address on the first meeting
• Find out exactly what the job entails, what the job discription is and what qualifications are needed.
