Search is on for suspected rapist who shoots cop

A suspect who is wanted for alleged rape and escape from lawful custody is now also wanted for attempted murder.

KABOKWENI – A member of the police’s detective service was injured by a wanted suspected criminal while on duty last night (Monday).

Const Carlson Philip Bhiya was apparently tracing suspects in the Maporo area when he was shot in the arm at about 19:30 and taken to hospital.

The alleged shooter fled the house they were in and according to reports, hijacked a Toyota Hi-Ace to escape. The suspect is known to the police and is a wanted in a rape case in Tonga, and wanted for escape from lawful custody.  However, his 29-year-old accomplice was arrested and a case of attempted murder has been opened.
