Be on the lookout for armed robbers’ getaway vehicle

Motorists are urged to be on the lookout for a green BMW with no registration plates, after the occupants were involved in an armed robbery yesterday afternoon.

KOMATIPOORT –  According to Const Natacia Mbuyane, spokesman for the Komatipoort Police Station, a green BMW bumped into the back of a red Volkswagen yesterday afternoon. The owner of the Volkswagen, Mr Christo van der Merwe, stopped to communicate with the driver and was shocked when three men climbed out of the car and pointed firearms at him.

The two armed suspects kept watch over Van der Merwe, while the third man searched the vehicle for valuables. An envelope containing about R5 000 cash and an iPhone, which was kept on Van der Merwe’s person, was stolen.

The suspects fled, leaving Van der Merwe on the scene.

A case of armed robbery has been opened and no arrests have been made.

Police urged the community to be on high alert and to immediately contact the Komatipoort SAPS if they spot the vehicle. “There should be no attempt to engage the suspects as they are armed and should be considered dangerous,” Mbuyane cautioned.
