Less accidents on the N4

TRAC said one of the key contributors to the decreased number of accidents along our route was the TRAC Easter Rescue and Road Safety Campaign.

MBOMBELA – The Easter Weekend is traditionally one of the busiest times of the year with thousands of motorists travelling between Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Mozambique.

Trans African Concessions (TRAC) spokesman, Ms Solange Soares-Nicholson, had predicted that the N4 was likely to be congested from noon on Thursday to the end of the long weekend. “We expect a high volume of cars from noon and people must try and leave early for their destination to avoid that,” she said.

She mentioned that during the 2015 festive season, more than 800 cars would pass through the tolls every hour. “This time we might have around 600 cars passing through our toll gates on an hourly period as travelling has to do with the seasons,” she said.

TRAC will handed out flyers to road users with information on the logistical documentation and other requirements they needed to have in order to access the borders. The campaign was in full swing from Thursday and TRACAssist were stationed at the Nkomazi Toll Plaza and other tolls from 12:00.

A decrease in accidents were also seen on the N4. TRAC said one of the key contributors to the decreased number of accidents along our route was the TRAC Easter Rescue and Road Safety Campaign.

This annual project saw the bulk of Mpumalanga Emergency Services and TRACAssist teams, stationed at the Alzu Petroport in Middelburg, and smaller units deployed to strategic points along the highway.

Soares-Nicholson added that toilets facilities were installed at the toll plazas to assist those stuck in traffic. In Mozambique emergency services and TRACAssist will be stationed at the old weighbridge in Matola.

The Department of Home Affairs also extended operating hours at selected ports of entry over the past Easter weekend. The Lebombo and Oshoek borders opened 24 hours a day until March 30, while Mananga opened from 07:00 to 20:00, Jeppes Reef from 07:00 to 22:00 and Mahamba from 07:00 to midnight.
