Suspect on the run after man is found dead

A security guard stationed at Lafarge Komatipoort is reportedly on the run after the body of one of his colleagues was found in a small dam near their workplace on Monday morning.

KOMATIPOORT –  According to Komatipoort SAPS spokesman Const Natacia Mbuyane, Mr Lizzy Malatsi (42) worked as a security guard for Protea Coin and was on duty the night of his death, which police believe was Saturday night.

Malatsi and a colleague who was working the same shift, reportedly fought during the night. “It is alleged that Malatsi and his partner both signed out on Saturday,” Mbuyane said.

One of the men’s colleagues reported the matter to be police after receiving a call from the suspect. “Another one of Malatsi’s colleagues said they received a call from the murder suspect, who asked when last they had seen him. The staff member told him that Malatsi had not arrived at work and the suspect then directed him to a nearby waterhole. It was there that the victim was found half naked and seemingly lifeless,” explained Mbuyane.

The victim was declared dead when police arrived at the scene, but they are still waiting for the autopsy report to establish the cause of death.

Police and colleagues have tried to contact the suspect but he has not responded to calls and has not been seen since the incident.

“We have launched an official manhunt for him and will be following up some positive leads in order to apprehend him as soon as possible,” Mbuyane reported.

The family of the deceased were notified of the incident and a murder case has been opened.
