BURGERSFORT – The Transnet-Phelophepa Health Care Train brought relief to many who visited this clinic on wheels recently. It offered health-care services to patients who were in desperate need of affordable treatment.
Phelophepa is equipped to provide general health, dental, eye and psychiatric care to people who cannot afford these services at a private facility. It also offers cancer screening tests, diabetes prevention and counselling sessions.
“We are staffed by 22 permanent employees who stay on and travel with the health train for nine months, starting in January to the end of September. Additionally, we also have medical students who assist us during treatments. We make use of local services such as nursing staff and cleaners to create community development in the area where we are temporarily stationed,” said Lynette Flusk, acting Phelophepa manager.
About 500 patients visit the different health-train departments daily. The Phelophepa Health Care Train will be heading for Bethal for one week after the scheduled treatments here have been completed. From Bethal it will call on Piet Retief for two weeks and then leave for KwaZulu-Natal to render services there.
