Man arrested with illicit cigarettes worth R1.9m in Acornhoek

Police intercepted a truck allegedly transporting illicit cigarettes from Musina to White River.

A 45-year-old man has been arrested after police seized illicit cigarettes with an estimated street value of R1.9m in Acornhoek.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said officers acted on information about a truck allegedly transporting illicit goods from Musina to White River.

A multidisciplinary law enforcement team intercepted the truck and searched it, uncovering a large quantity of suspected illicit cigarettes. The cigarettes were confiscated and the driver was arrested.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Mhala Magistrate’s court soon on charges relating to the possession of illicit cigarettes.

Police investigations are ongoing and Masondo said further arrests have not been ruled out.
