LYDENBURG – People from all walks of life came together to partake in a walk against diabetes and obesity. The walk is a project started by Lydenburg Adventist Academy (LAA), a primary school in town. The aim was to encourage the residents to lead a healthy lifestyle. The participants walked from the LAA to Checkers (The Heads Complex), which was a route of six kilometres.
According to Mr Paul Runyowa from the academy, they want the community to be active so that they improve their well-being.
“We want everyone living with diabetes, obesity and heart conditions to be motivated to make a difference in their lives because it is never too late to start,” he said.
Taking part in the walk was free for everyone. “As a school, we are promoting a healthy lifestyle for all our pupils. Even the food at our school provides the required nutrition and we thought we should also do the same thing for the residents of Lydenburg, because taking care of one’s health is very vital,” he explained.
Before the participants embarked on the walk they went underwent free medical check-ups. “We had medical professionals in our school who gave each and every one of the participants a medical report about their fitness and they also advised them on what they could do to live a much healthier life,” he added.
“We want to thank everyone who participated, in particular the CEO of Lydenburg Hospital, Pharais Mogane, for their support. It means a lot to the school and we also want to thank each and everyone for the help in ensuring that our project was a success,” said Runyowa.
