Piggy in need of funds for emergency medical assistance

Broekman had to fight off the dogs while a good Samaritan, Mr Gerhard van der Merwe, came to the pig's rescue.

LYDENBURG – A pot-belly pig was rescued from certain death this afternoon after it was mauled by two Pit bull terriers.

Mr Deon Broekman, local hazmat operator, received a call from the SAPS that a person is being attacked by dogs near Kantoor Street. Upon arrival Broekman found the pig cornered at the Sterkspruit dam wall by the dogs.

Broekman had to fight off the dogs while a good Samaritan, Mr Gerhard van der Merwe, came to the pig’s rescue. The pig was taken to a local veterinarian clinic, but the decision was made that if the owners of the pig did not collect it by 17:00 this afternoon, that it will have to be put down. The pig was administered two shots, one being an antibiotics, and the other a painkiller.

Broekman said that he would not stand for it and contacted Dr Marietjie Malan of Long Tom animal clinic. The pig was transported to the clinic by Broekman. Upon arrival Dr Tessa Brouwer phoned Onderstepoort to determine the exact dosage of the  sedative for the pig. “You cannot administer just any sedative to a pig and you have to keep a close eye on it in case it goes into shock,” Brouwer explained.

Broekman said that he is determined to save the little pig. “It must be someone’s pet. I can’t let it simply be put down without trying.”

Broekman is asking anyone willing to assist with funding for the little pig’s clinic costs to please contact the clinic on 071 285 8122.
