BURGERSFORT – St Thomas College’s pupils recently clinched honours at a mine-safety competition that was sponsored by Thorncliff Mine’s Helena operation. The competition was hosted at the mine.
Bonolo Mphogo (13), Angel Simelane (13) and Tiisetso Makofane (7) excelled in the challenge to either design a poster or write a speech on matters related to safety at the mine and their homes.
Simelane won the competition with her well-drawn poster, and received a R5 000 gift voucher for her efforts.
Mphogo and Makofane shared second place and received R3 000 gift vouchers.
Principal of St Thomas, TGK John, said, “The kids worked hard to end up vanquishing. Their winning posters were indeed marvelous. I am proud of them”.
The competition involved children whose parents were employed at Thorncliff Mine, an initiative to inform locals on mine safety.
