Farmers get advice on livestock production

Obaro is excited about expanding the project even further and helping more farmers across the country.

KOMATIPOORT – Emerging farmers are expanding their knowledge and experience of proper livestock production and reproduction practices thanks to a livestock improvement and feedlot project by Obaro.

The agricultural company, with deep roots in the industry and branches in Komatipoort and Malalane, started the initiative to teach farmers practical skills to improve the health and quality of their cattle. It also helps to solve overgrazing, which is a major problem in rural areas.

It is run by Tanki Mokoena, Hans Mathabe and Ncebs Lutuli, who provide cluster and one-on-one guidance and training. The project has spread to commercial farms and currently offers training to workers in Middelburg, Lydenburg, Rustenburg and Wonderboom. Training includes animal health, nutrition and practical application skills.

The project works closely with stud breeders such as Redgate Bonsmaras and Steinfurt Simbras to encourage emerging farmers to focus on improving their herd with high-quality genes, as well as Farmers’ Associations and the Department of Agriculture.

The drought has had an impact on the project, but its leaders are guiding the production of more than 50 cattle, with an additional 40 in the pipeline. They are also helping with vaccinating parasite control, supplementation and getting the farmers and their cattle through the extra dry winter months.

Obaro is excited about expanding the project even further and helping more farmers across the country.
