Marno claims SA MMA title

The young Wolves Martial Arts Academy member won a gold medal at the nationals.

Marno Olsson, a student at Wolves Martial Arts Academy (WMAA), won the men’s youth gold medal in the under 62kg division at the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) National Championships in Vanderbijlpark on April 30.

Marno competed against fighters from across South Africa. He faced Iderees Galsoolker of Legion Fitness Academy in the gold-medal bout. Just 67 seconds into the fight, Marno secured the gold medal and became a South African champion with a submission via an armbar from guard.

The win marks his first national title and a major milestone for him. “We’re incredibly proud of Marno,” said Xander Davis, head instructor at WMAA. “This result reflects months of discipline, sacrifice and hard work. It shows what’s possible for youth fighters coming out of Mbombela when they commit to the process.”

Marno is a learner at Hoërskool Nelspruit.

WMAA fighters Kian Olsson and Paul Nothnagel also competed in the nationals, Paul going 1-1 and Kian 2-2 in the biggest division of the day, which consisted of nine competitors.

The victory puts Wolves Martial Arts Academy on the map nationally and adds to the club’s growing record in competitive martial arts. The team is now preparing for the MASA Nationals.
