Numerous items to the value of an undisclosed amount were looted during a robbery at the iStore in I’langa Mall on Saturday night.
Mbombela police spokesman Capt Dawie Pretorius confirmed that a guard, who was on duty at the time, had been overpowered during the burglary that occurred around 21:00, but he was not injured.
Police suspect the robbery was carried out by four armed suspects. CCTV footage shows they were in the shopping centre for only a few minutes before they fled in what looked like a red Volkswagen Polo.
The general manager of I’langa Mall, Ms Sandi Human added that an investigation was currently underway, and that every aspect of the burglary would be probed.
According to Pretorius, the suspects gained entry by allegedly forcing the doors open with a crowbar. “A total of 14 iPhones, four iPads, monitors and computers were stolen,” he said.
“We have to go through the CCTV footage to try and track down the suspects. A case of business robbery is now under investigation.”
Human said due to the general upswing in break-ins in South Africa, mall management, with their security company, is assessing all security procedures and operations to ensure the safety of its valued customers and tenants.
At the time of going to press, no arrests had been made.
