Ephedrine worth R160 000 seized

Police arrested a suspect with two bags of drugs worth R160 000 after following up a tip-off.

MBUZINI – A tip-off led the police to ephedrine worth about R160 000 on Friday morning.

Local police officers followed up on information regarding a suspect in possession of drugs in Hoyi Trust. They located the vehicle, stopped and searched it.

A bag full of ephedrine, which can be used in the manufacturing of methamphetamine, was found in the possession of a 31-year-old man.

He was arrested and appeared in the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

In a previous case in August, ephedrine worth R10,8 million was found hidden in a Land Rover during a stop-and-search operation at the Nkomazi Toll Plaza.

Police in the Tonga cluster, which comprises all the police stations in Nkomazi, have had several successes in connection with drugs over the past two months.

Three weeks ago, an off-duty police officer arrested four suspected drug dealers in Tonga Block C and confiscated dagga worth R70 000.

A month ago, a large-scale operation with several stakeholders resulted in, among other successes, the arrest of six suspects in possession of drugs. Police at the border also found heroin worth R3,9 million hidden in a vehicle.

During a roadblock near Malelane on October 12, three suspects were arrested for possession of dagga and dagga worth R60 000 was seized.
