TCLM provides insight into this morning’s disruption

LYDENBURG – The executive mayor, Ms Selina Mashigo-Sekgobela, called a meeting with the newspaper to discuss this morning’s uproar by members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) at the municipal offices.
Mashilo along with members of the mayoral committee told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that on February 1 union members sent a memorandum to TCLM about their concern of not forming part of the selection panel for the appointment of a new municipal manager. The newspaper was shown the correspondence letters between the union and TCLM.
The current acting municipal manager, Mr Eugene Malungana, said that the municipality responded to the memorandum and stated that as per resolution union members are not allowed to form part of the selection panel.
“Only the mayor, members of the executive committee (MMC) and external stakeholders may form part of this panel. We have called the union to a meeting to address the current issue, but they simply walked out of the meeting. We will try to again establish a meeting with them and should they not comply, we will have to issue them with ultimatums and possible disciplinary actions.”
TCLM officials said that they would like to apologise to residents for the inconvenience caused and said that clean up of the town will be attended to.
Malungana said that the process is still unfolding but that the newspaper will be provided with necessary feedback. TCLM officials confirmed that an appointment for the municipal manager’s position has not been filled and that the process is ongoing.
