BREAKING NEWS: Sewerage plant non-operational for weeks
Not only is the stench at the plant unbearable, raw sewerage is also overflowing from the sewerage dams because the primary treatment tanks are not operational.
LYDENBURG – Today it was discovered that the sewerage works just outside town has been non-operational for more than three weeks. According to reliable sources within Thaba Chweu Municipality (TCM), the cables at the plant were stolen on February 9 and have yet to be replaced.
“There is no security at the sewerage works. The trenches that were dug up to gain access to the cables would have taken days to complete. The perpetrators even brought along some refreshments while they were busy stealing he cables.”
Beer bottles were strewn along the trench which indicates that the suspects had a lot of time to dig up the cables. About a 100 metres worth of cable were stolen. The sources indicate that the replacement of the cables would cost about R1, 9 million.
Not only is the stench at the plant unbearable, raw sewerage is also overflowing from the sewerage dams because the primary treatment tanks are not operational. This sewerage overflow is thus now spilling directly into the Dorp’s River.
DA Cllr. Nicko Janse van Vuuren said that he is shocked that the plant is even left to stand for a day, let alone a month. “We have got the whole town’s sewerage that is not being processed and is now flowing into the Dorp’s River. I find it absolutely shocking that this situation is allowed. It should be a high priority. There is also no security present.”
He said that this municipality really need to get going now. “To see something like that (the raw sewerage) flowing into the river really galled me.”
TCM has yet to respond to queries about the sewerage works.
