LYDENBURG – Lydenburg Animal Rescue and Protection Service (Lapsar) was closed down by Mbombela’s SPCA yesterday afternoon.
This follows after Marcelle Hoffman of this organisation in clamped down on the sub-standard shelter after an unannounced inspection.
The shelter was in a disastrous state, which left van Hoffman with no other choice but to close it down. Dog stool, urine and no water and food urged her to close the shelter. Some dogs also suffered from mange.
Several other dogs were diagnosed with kennel fewer. This causes them to behave in an unnatural matter. Most of the dogs have been in cages for more than three years with nothing more than rags to sleep on. Al 13 dogs will be removed from the shelter and it will be closed down entirely.
Local veterinarians Marietjie Malan, Anthony Davis and Jac Brink immediately assisted the SPCA with the removal .
Malan however advised the SPCA members not to sedate the dogs as no veterinary service will be at hand on route to Mbombela.
All dogs will be removed by Saturday. Hofmann said that the manager of the shelter has no income nor experience in running a shelter. “Therefor she can’t sterilize or treat dogs should they fall ill. Her adoption fee is a bag of dog food which is unacceptable.”
