Possible dark Easter for town

The plan is to now divert some of the power from the industrial centre to the town. If that fails, municipal load shedding will continue for the duration of the Easter weekend.

LYDENBURG – Thaba Chweu Municipality (TCLM) has had to implement municipal load shedding which could continue for the whole weekend if a suitable solution is not found.

This comes after delays have occurred in the delivery of the replacement transformer which was lost at Rooidraai sub-station on April 5.

TCLM spoke to the Steelburger/Lydenburg News and said that it is still doing preparations to restore power to the town. “There is a delay in the delivery of the transformer on account of Easter weekend. The delay is on their side. In the meantime we are experiencing an overload on the system.”

The municipality said that it is trying to do away with the load shedding and is currently busy with modifications on the electricity system. “We will update you again after lunch.”

Although the payment for the transformer was made, the amount only reflected today. DA Cllr. Nicko Janse van Vuuren said that the company explained to him that according to law these abnormal low-bed trucks are not allowed on national roads over weekends. “Even if they send a truck now, it will be stuck here for the entire weekend. These trucks only travel about 80 km/h.”

According to reports LH Marthinusen, the company that will be supplying and transporting the transformer, waited for the payment to first reflect on account of TCLM’s bad payment record.

The plan is to now divert some of the power from the industrial centre to the town. If that fails, municipal load shedding will continue for the duration of the Easter weekend.
