Convicted rapists sentenced to years behind bars

Two men will be spending a decade or two behind bars after being found guilty of rape in two separate cases.

TONGA – Desmond Mfanufikile Mabila was sentenced to 22 years’ imprisonment by the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court in Tonga after he allegedly raped a 3-year-old girl on February 9.

According to police reports, Mabila slept over at a friend’s house in Mananga. The next morning the friend, who is the victim’s uncle, left for work. While he was away, Mabila reportedly raped the little girl.

The victim’s grandmother found out about the incident and called her neighbours to assist. They confronted Mabila and he didn’t even try to deny the crime, reported Tonga SAPS spokesman Cpt. Mzwandile Nyambi.

The police were notified, a case of rape was opened at the Mbuzini Police Station and the suspect was arrested.

On April 6, a 33-year-old Mozambican was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for rape, four years after the incident occurred.

Douglas Solomon Makwakwa reportedly grabbed an 18-year-old woman while she was walking home from a shop in the Tonga area around 19:00 on April 6, 2012. He dragged her into nearby bushes and raped her.

A case of rape was opened at Tonga SAPS and investigations led Sgt. Lesedi Dhladhla to the culprit.

After Makwakwa’s arrest, he was found guilty and sentenced in the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court.

Tonga SAPS station, Brig. Velisiwe Mdaka welcomed the sentence and commended Sergeant Lesedi Dhladhla on a job well done.
