Tonga police investigate murder, sexual assault

Police are investigating incidents where a girl was allegedly raped on Friday and a man fatally shot at his house on Sunday.

TONGA – Police are looking for leads to identify suspects who killed a 44-year-old man during a robbery at his residence in Naas on Sunday morning.

Oupa Ntuli was shot in the chest when he walked through his gate around 02:45 and the robbers made off with his black Ford sedan.

A case of murder was opened at Tonga Police Station. No arrests have been made. Police urge anyone with information on the suspects or incident to contact  Lt Col Bhekinkosi Shongwe on  082-464-6602.

Tonga police are also investigating a case of sexual assault. A 42-year-old man from Mdladla Trust is in custody after he allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl on Friday at around 11:00.

The victim was reportedly raped at his residence and he gave her money after the act to keep her quiet.  However, she immediately went to tell her parents about the incident and it was reported to police.

The suspect was arrested by the Tonga Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

He appeared in the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of sexual assault and was remanded in custody until his court appearance on Wednesday.

By deadline the outcome was not yet known. Tonga SAPS station commander, Brig Velisiwe Mdaka, spoke out strongly against the rape of children and thanked the victim’s parents for immediately reporting the matter.
