Man arrested for allegedly assaulting car guard claims he is the victim
"We actually don’t want people to park in Geelhout Street as it is not an area designated for parking and people can become victims of exploitation. People should use the Park and Rides or designated parking areas.”

A man who was arrested by police for allegedly assaulting car guards last night claims he is the victim. According to Michelle Savva, the daughter of Chris Savva, he and her stepmother Carmen Savva left the Innibos festival at around 20:00.

“They felt they had indulged a bit so they decided to leave. When they went back to their vehicle which they parked in a private driveway in Geelhout Street, the car guard demanded more money from them.”
She said her father refused to give the man more money. “The guard closed the gate and refused for them to leave. My father then went to talk to the two men. There was an argument and my father was assaulted by one of the men with an iron rod. He kept telling them he did not want to fight.”

Savva said a woman also approached her father and hit him with a broom, this drew others to the scene where he was hit from behind on his head with a spade. “When the police arrived they only saw my father trying to hit back after he was assaulted and they arrested him.”
“I arrived then and asked the police if he was okay and that my father needed medical attention. They took a statement from my stepmother and finally let my father go.”
She said her father refused to go to the hospital and instead was taken home.

J&M Security operations manager Werner Terblanche said he was told that a man was arrested by police for assaulting a car guard while under the influence. “This did not happen inside the Innibos area. We actually don’t want people to park in Geelhout Street as it is not an area designated for parking and people can become victims of exploitation. People should use the Park and Rides or designated parking areas.”
Nelspruit police Station Commander Brig Gerrie Aggenbach said he was aware of the incident but was informed that Savva had assaulted the car guard, but he encouraged the family to come open a case so the police could investigate the matter properly.
