MECKLENBURG – Local police have welcomed the sentence of 25-year-old Mpho Malatjie, who was found guilty of rape by the Burgersfort Regional Court.

Malatjie was arrested by Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) members on November 20, 2016 at Ga-Selala Village, after he raped an underage girl at Motlolo Village.

“He tied both the girl’s hands, dragged her to a nearby bush and raped her inside his car,” said Sgt Kgalake Mampuru, spokesman for the Mecklenburg SAPS.

According to Mampuru, Malatjie was convicted and sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for rape and abduction;

10 years for raping a minor, and eight years for kidnapping.

“Both sentences will run concurrently.” The station commander of Mecklenburg SAPS, Col Shibombie Shirinda, praised the police involved in the case for the sterling work.

“This is a clear sign that there is no room for criminals in our society. This is also a warning that they will face the wrath of the law if they continue with their bad deeds,” said Shirinda.
