Community attacks Mangweni resident over alleged stolen cattle

Police had to rescue a man from an angry mob yesterday afternoon after community members allegedly found stolen cattle in his kraal.

MANGWENI – A 35-year-old resident is recuperating in hospital after being attacked by a group of community members accusing him of cattle theft.

According to Col. Mtsholi Bhembe of Tonga SAPS, community members reportedly found eight cattle that were stolen in Schoemansdal in the man’s kraal, with three already sold off.

The angry mob took the man from his house yesterday afternoon and brutally assaulted him.

Police were notified and managed to rescue the man and his wife. The man was taken to hospital for treatment.

A case of stock theft was opened and the man is set to appear in the Nkomazi Magistrate’s court in absentia, as he is still recuperating in hospital.

The provincial SAPS commissioner, Lt Gen Mondli Zuma, urged the community not to take the law into their own hands but to report criminals to the police.
