Have a vacation while earning big bucks

Ten things to help you have an adventure by working on a yacht

MBOMBELA – Experienced local resident Monja Jacobs has been working on yachts since February. Hurricane season has interfered with the work in the Northern Hemisphere’s summer this year, but she would still recommend it to anyone keen to travel while earning good money.

She tells Lowvelders how to go about it.

1) Many people don’t realise how hard you work. You will be on duty 24/7 and everything must be beyond perfect all the time. The tips, however, are good.

2) All appointments happen on short notice. And often people who hire you want to meet you first. People also typically want you to start within two days, but it takes about that time to travel there from SA. Go find the jobs there.

3) Don’t tell anyone that you’re looking for a job in the USA. You won’t get past customs if you do.

4) Go over with a B1B2 visa. About $2 000 will see you survive for a month. It shouldn’t take longer to get a job.

5) If you want to go, just go. Most appointments happen by word of mouth, or sometimes Facebook.

6) Find a crew house to live inon Facebook. You pay per week. They are not widely advertised. Make friends once there and find a way to use your time wisely while you wait for a job.

7) The industry tends to swallow you up. There are loads of career paths that can lead from yachting.

8) Fort Lauderdale is the largest centre of crew houses. West Palm Beach has some of the biggest shipping yards in the world.

9) Go escape adulthood! You will have very little responsibility while seeing the world and meeting a large, diverse range of

people from all countries and cultures along the way.

10) Don’t go in blind – ask and take advice from those in the know.
