Counterfeit sneakers worth over R5m confiscated

A tip-off to a security officer led to the arrest of a suspect and the confiscation of sneakers worth more than R5 million.

KARINO – An officer of Phoenix Security lay in wait at the Nkomazi Toll Plaza on Tuesday evening, following a tip-off regarding a truck with counterfeit goods.

He spotted the truck and notified SAPS’ White River K-9 Unit. They waited at Karino and requested the driver pull over and let them search the cargo.

Counterfeit sneakers worth over R5 million were found hidden behind crates. A 33-year old was arrested and the illicit goods confiscated.

The truck was reportedly heading to Johannesburg via Mbombela.

The suspect will appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of possession of counterfeit goods.
