Cycling from East Rand to Maputo for Charity

Cyclists travelled 685 kilometres raising funds for an orphanage, old age home and psychological rehabilitation centre.

September 27 marked the start of this year’s Luso Africa Charity Cycling tour to Mozambique.

This year is the 10th anniversary of the event. Starting from the clubhouse in Primrose in the East Rand, the tour happened in four stages over four days. Cyclists travelled 685 kilometres.

On day one, the cyclists covered 190 kilometres from Primrose to Groblersdal. Day two saw participants travelling 170 kilometres to Lydenburg through the Long Tom Pass.

Front: Martin Van Wyk, Flavio Venceslau, Bill Nicolson, (back) Jorge Faria and Moses Venceslau.

On day three they travelled 175 kilometres to Malalane. On the way to Malalane the cyclists stopped.

On the final day of the tour, the group ended up in Maputo after travelling 160 kilometres.

On Sunday morning Luso Africa cycling hosted the official Kermesse circuit race. The race featured people from Mozambique, Swaziland and South Africa.

President of the tour, Joaquim Melo, and the club chairman, Jose Almeida.

Emily Abrantes, from Debque Solution Services, provided an explanation of how the funds were raised.
“To be able to participate in the tour, every cyclist had to get someone to sponsor them per kilometre or make a donation.”

According to Abrantes, the money raised would be donated to the Missão de São Roque orphanage and Sagrado coração de Jesus psychological rehabilitation centre in Mozambique as well as a Portuguese old-age home called Lusiadas.
