Hawks catch illegal abortion doctor in the act

An unregistered doctor performing illegal abortions was arrested at his practice in Malalane on Tuesday during a joint operation by members of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Unit and Health Professions Council of SA.

MALALANE –The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Unit and Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) raided a suspected illegal surgery practice in town on Tuesday.

They found an unregistered doctor allegedly in the process of carrying out an illegal abortion.

Investigations were started after the Hawks and HPCSA received complaints regarding the illegal surgery and medical professional. They found that Abubakari Kaweesa (46) was no registered with the medical council of SA, thus practicing illegally.

Kaweesa reportedly used traditional medicines and abortion tablets in his practice.

He was arrested for contravening three Acts and appeared in the Malelane Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. He will remain in police custody and his next court appearance is on Wednesday.
