Barberton Secondary the best in MP

Barberton Secondary School has once again proved its mettle.

A group of learners committed to climate change by emerging victorious in the Mpumalanga climate change competition.
The learners will now represent the province at national level in December, in Johannesburg.
Charles Methula said last year the school won the local circuit and district level, but succumbed at provincial level.
“This year under my leadership as the head of department for science, and that of Eric Ansomanyi who is an English teacher, we took the learners through the programme. All the learners were selected from grade 10,” he said.

The learners are Sibongiseni Mkhabela, Thokozani Mavimbela, Luyanda Mthunywa, Samkelisiwe Mncina, Theo Mavimbela, Mpho Nkosi and Sikwelihle Mkhwanazi.
According to Methule, the purpose of the climate change competition was to educate the school, community, province and the country.
After winning the Barberton department of education and Ehlanzeni circuit, the school went to Ermelo last Thursday to compete on provincial level. It came second in the most improved category.

For their effort, the team members were awarded a floating trophy, a 1 000-litre JoJo tank, four shovels and four garden forks.
Mthobisi Sithole, the school principal, said they were very proud of the learners and the teachers for putting the school on the map for all the good reasons.
“With the help of these learners and teachers, the school is now planting trees as a way to embark on climate change. We have also embarked on a clean-up campaign and water safety programmes. The school wants is to set an example in curbing climate change,” concluded Sithole.
