POLSEC: Mbombela’s weekly crime report

The local police issued the weekly Polsec report. This serves as a guide to dangerous areas, times to be extra vigilant and gives a small peek into the minds of criminals.

Common robbery

• Affected areas: Henshall Street, Anderson Street, Short Brown Street and Bester Street
• Time: 23:00 and 04:00
• Days: Monday, Thursday and Friday
• Vehicle involved: None
• Suspects: 2 to 8
Modus operandi:

Henshall Street: Victim was out walking during the early hours of the morning and met two unknown suspects. The victim was forced to draw cash from an ATM. One suspect was arrested.

Short Brown Street: The victim was walking and met an unknown suspect who threatened him. The suspect made off with a wallet containing bank cards. The suspect also made off with cash, a cellphone and tekkies.

Anderson Street: Victim was approached in the early hours of the morning by eight suspects. The person was assaulted and a Samsung tablet and some cash was taken.

Bester Street: The victim was sitting inside their parked vehicle. An unknown suspect came to the driver’s-side window and asked for R2. While concentrating on this suspect, two others opened the door, grabbed two cellphones and cash then ran away.

Robbery with a firearm

• Affected areas: R40 to Barberton Hilltop
• Days: Monday
• Time: 10:40
• Suspects involved: 2
• Vehicle involved: White VW Polo with no registration and black Toyota Corolla with unknown registration.
 Modus Operandi:

The victim alleges that he/she was driving when a white VW Polo with no registration stopped in front of them and blocked the way. The victim tried to overtake, but another black Toyota Corolla blocked them from the side. The victim pulled off and stopped. Two unknown suspects came from the Toyota Corolla and pointed firearms at the victim. They demanded the keys and pulled the victim out of the car. They tried to start it but could not. The suspects then searched the victim, took a firearm and laptop and left the victim with the vehicle.

Business robbery

• Affected areas: Henshall Street Plaza PEP Cell.
• Days: Sunday
• Time: 12:55
• Suspects involved: 2
• Vehicle involved: None 

Modus Operandi:

The victim was busy at the shop when two unknown suspects entered. They pointed a firearm at the victim and ordered the victim to go to the office. They demanded the safe be opened. They took cash and 15 cellphones from the safe and fled the scene.

Theft out of a motor vehicle

• Affected areas: Henshall Street, Bell Street, Andrew Street, Samora Machel Drive, Paul Kruger Street, Crossing Centre, Batis Street and Mars Street Stiltes
• Time: Between 12:00 and 19:59
• Days: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday

Modus operandi:

Window and lock broken or opening doors, targeting laptops and cellphones.

Burglary of residence

• Affected areas: Mountain View, Drum Rock, Kelkiewyn Street, Mataffin Woodhouse, Hermansberg Farm, Ferreira Complex, Moonlight Street, Waterbok Street, Annecke Street, Gerit Maritz Street, Dr Enos Mabuza Drive and Msila Street.
• Time: Between 19:00 and 07:59 and 10:00 and 16:59
• Days: Between Monday, Friday and Saturday
• Modus operandi: Doors forced open and a window was broken. Laptop, cellphones and flat screen TV stolen.

Burglary of business

• Affected areas: Samora Machel Drive, Cape Union Mart Riverside Mall, Vintonia Bidvest Afcom, Heyneke Street
• Time: Between between 16:00 and 18:00
• Days: Monday, Friday and Thursday

Modus operandi:

Windows were broken, Clothing, nuts and computer equipment stolen.
