Reformed gangster is behind bars

The sentencing of self-proclaimed reformed gangster, Gift "Scapbro" Mnisi (25) grabbed the interest of residents.

Mnisi was sentenced by the Barberton Magistrate’s Court to five years’ imprisonment last Tuesday.

Three years of his jail term were suspended and he will spend two years behind bars.

Mnisi and his co-accused, Themba Mwali (33) appeared before magistrate Sheila Msibi and prosecutor Michael Mazibuko.

Mwali was acquitted on the charge of intimidation.

The duo has been charged with intimidating Capt Whiskey Masimini Shabangu in an incident that happened on October 26, 2016.

They led a group of community members to Shabangu’s house, which is situated at Long Homes section in Emjindini.

According to a statement submitted by the captain, when they arrived at his home they threatened to torch his house and the Barberton Police Station if he did not release Mandla Mamba. The latter was arrested after he had allegedly violated his bail conditions.

Mnisi is serving his sentence at Nelspruit Correctional Services Centre.

His sentencing came barely four days after he committed himself to whatever might happen to his life, including going to jail.

However, Barberton Times has since learned that Mnisi has filed an application to appeal his sentencing.

Details of the grounds for his appeal are not yet known. However, it is understood he filed his notice of intention to appeal last Friday.

It was set to be heard at the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

At the time of going to press, the verdict of the appeal was not yet known.

Meanwhile, Mnisi and Mamba’s case of malicious damage to property and theft of firearms will be heard on February 27 at the Nelspruit Regional Court.

The duo, along with Mwali, Sihle Nkambule (24) and Sabelo Mlotshwa (20), allegedly torched a water truck and stole a firearm from the driver in September 2016.

Mlotshwa has since, however, passed away.

Both Mamba and Mnisi (before his recent imprisonment) were out on a bail of R10 000 while Nkambule, Mlothswa and Mwali remain out on R500 bail each.
