Pothole the size of a pool has residents fuming

According to Antoinette van Aswegen half of her car's bumper and all her backlights fell off. "My windscreen cracked and my front indicator light is faulty on account of all these potholes."

LYDENBURG – The massive pothole at the corner of Voortrekker and Viljoen Street is growing bigger by the day.
This crossing in town where the two main streets meet has been deteriorating for the past three months. At the moment, the hole which is now the size of a swimming pool is forcing motorists to drive around the trench in order to avoid damage to their vehicles.

For months Thaba Chweu Local Municipality (TCLM) has simply ignored this massive hole. Other smaller potholes are now being repaired by private companies while TCLM is sitting with folded hands.
During the budget speech of mayor Selina Mashego last week, she said that R30 million has apparently been set aside to implement the refurbishment of streets which include Voortrekker, Viljoen, de Clerq and Kerk.
When this refurbishment will take place, is yet to be announced. In the meantime, motorists have to endure driving through and around this colossal ditch.

The newspaper asked residents whether they have had any damage to their vehicles done while having to drive through this enormous hole.
Ronel Venter Lindeque said that off all the rattling whilst driving through the hole, her vehicle’s headlight blew. “I also have to pump my tyres weekly on account of this.”
Natasha Erasmus said that their vehicle’s one wheel sustained severe damage on account of the pothole.
According to Antoinette van Aswegen half of her car’s bumper and all her backlights fell off. “My windscreen cracked and my front indicator light is faulty on account of all these potholes.”
The only “repairs” that have taken place to this hole is rubble that TCLM occasionally dumps in the pothole. This includes building material and concrete rubble.
