Portuguese fare and hearty hospitality at a fair price

The arrival of Adega brings Portuguese cuisine and a hint of Mozambican fusion to the Lowveld

The Adega recipe is a simple one. Traditional Portuguese cuisine. Always open. Always good.

The story of Adega – which translated means “the cellar”- began in the late 90s when founder Luis Ferreira identified a gap in the Johannesburg market. Back then there were few good eateries which allowed for Portuguese people to gather and enjoy themselves.

Portuguese fare and traditional hospitality bring in another line of business entirely. Luis opened the first Adega do Monge translated as “the cellar of the monk” in Kensington, east of Johannesburg and so the Adega logo was born, showing a happy monk indulging in good wine.

The restaurant in Mbombela is open seven days a week, with an emphasis on value for money. Adega’s prices and flavours are hard to beat, and offer superb in-house specials.

In addition to seafood, Adega has become recognised for their chicken, meat, fish, sushi, starters and salads. Sundays offer a buffet with a difference, where everything is fresh and the variety is wide and has the locals talking.

Adega offers conference facilities, with room for private and year-end functions.

Alan and Delene Willemse, the hosts at Adega, see customers as the most valuable asset in their business. They just love them.

The wine list includes a wide variety – including affordable South African favourites and some lesser known surprises, with a wide range of sparkling wines and champagnes to suit any palate or occasion.

Adega has won a Best of Mbombela award for 3 consecutive years.
