Locals celebrate Madiba day
Mandela Day in Nelspruit was a roaring success, with people from all over donating to charities of their choice.

A caring fever spread all over the city as people donated time, money or skills where they saw a need. See how the day was celebrated below.

1. Pro-Life
This organisation’s Madiba Day celebrations continued well into the weekend. Businesses and individuals treated the dogs and cats on the property. They walked and played with the pets and gave them the much-needed love and attention they required.

2. SANBS
Even though the Nelspruit SANBS did not reach their target of 100 people donating blood, they still had many more donors than usual. “We received about 15 to 20 units more than we would on a normal Wednesday at the branch at Riverside Mall,” said Bruce Macaulay who is on the donor committee of the SANBS, and added that they managed to get 41 units of blood on the day.

3. Care Buddies
The Nelspruit Care Buddies celebrated their 11th birthday on Wednesday by spoiling the volunteers who help them to a breakfast at Suikerbossie Restaurant. Part of their Mandela Day project was collecting money and items for senior citizens at Crossing SUPERSPAR on Fridays and Saturdays right through July.

According to Care Buddies chairman, Meisie Barnard, they have had an overwhelming response and are very excited to hand out the donations they have managed to raise.

4. Nelspruit’s own Mrs Mpumalanga finalist, Victoria Shongwe
Victoria Shongwe, along with the team from Keeping Our Kids Clean, handed out hygiene packs at Vukasambe Primary School. They also cleaned up a part of the area with the children of the school.

5. Blessing Creche
Lowvelder joined hands with Stabilis and other businesses to do upgrades at Blessing Creche in Mataffin. The school was painted, a vegetable garden was started and the playground was upgraded to promise years of fun to the children.
