New mayor appointed at FTLM
Phala will follow in the footsteps of Johannes Phokane, who was recalled by the ANC Limpopo's provincial executive committee (PEC) amid scandals in the VBS saga.
BURGERSFORT – The vacant mayoral post at Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM) has been filled.
After months of the municipality operating without a political leader, Naume Phala was appointed last Monday.
Phala will follow in the footsteps of Johannes Phokane, who was recalled by the ANC Limpopo’s provincial executive committee (PEC) amid scandals in the VBS saga. There were mixed reactions to the appointment.

Steelpoort Leadership and Force of Commander’s (SLFC) Elias Tshukudu said they were pleased with the appointment.
“We expect her not to waste time and ensure services are brought to the people. There was a lack of service delivery during the time in which the municipality was without a mayor. Let’s hope she will work for the people.”
Resident, Abram Malatji said on the municipality’s Facebook page, “We are humbled by the recognition of credentials and commitment to the struggle of our people. This is long overdue. Phala’s credentials will add value to the bettering of lives in FTLM. We are prepared to support and see her succeed in this tough position.”

DA councillor at FTLM, Lethabile Kgwedi said although they cannot dictate to the ANC who to choose for the mayoral position, such a person must possess the required, necessary and relevant skills to execute the responsibilities that come with the position.
“The person elected as mayor must be able to execute the task at hand without any hindrances. Unfortunately, that was not considered by the ANC. We have noted with great sadness that the incumbent is incompetent as the rest of the ANC deployees.

“This is just a mere shifting of pieces of chess board and we are expecting nothing positive to come out of this fruitless exercise.”
The opposition parties also indicated that Phala had failed dismally in her previous position as Speaker of the FTLM council.
She is the first woman to lead the merged Fetakgomo Municipality and Greater Tubatse Municipality.
