BURGERSFORT – A Ga Mongatane man was on the receiving end of an act of kindness and honesty.
A Good Samaritan made Amos Mashabela’s day, after he lost his wallet while shopping at Twin City complex last Wednesday.
Inside the wallet was his identity document, bank cards, store cards and a host of important slips. There was also
R1 200 in cash. Mashabela did not expect to see the wallet or the money ever again. Instead, he feared the worst and assumed that everything would be lost.
“Nowadays, we have too much crime in our area. People are robbed every day, identity documents are stolen. I just thought I will never get my stuff. I even thought people pick-pocketed me while I was shopping and stole the wallet. Thank God the wallet was in good hands.”
Robert Motau from Praktiseer found the wallet. “I came across the wallet at Twin City and checked what was inside and realised that whoever lost it had lost important documents and his hard-earned cash.”
Motau said the whole day he embarked on a mission to search for the owner, with no luck.

“I then decided to approach the local bank tellers to ask help in tracing the owner’s contacts on their system as he is banking with one of the banks at Twin City.” At about 15:00, I convinced them, and they agreed to give the contacts. I repeatedly phoned Mashabela without a response. In the evening I got hold of him and shared the good news.”
The two agreed to meet in town last Thursday, when Motau handed back the wallet. “I don’t need any payment from him, I am just giving back what belongs to him. I try to teach my children to do the right things in life, help people when you can, regardless of the outcome. This story is more about restoring faith in people than anything.”
Motau said it is in his blood to always assist. “I am not a thief. I previously helped another person who had lost her purse in the Burgersfort CBD,” said the retired Burgersfort Post Office employee.
Mashabela said it really meant a lot that Motau went out of his way for a complete stranger. “There are still good and amazing people in this world.”
