Motorists will be fined for illegal LED lights

In terms of the National Road Traffic Act, LED light bars and spotlights are not permitted - not when it is covered, and even when it’s not connected.

LYDENBURG – Traffic officers in town are currently warning motorists that LED lights displayed on vehicles are illegal and extremely dangerous.

Officials asked the newspaper to inform residents that these lights are not allowed on any vehicle. At the moment, officials are letting motorists go with a warning pertaining to the display of the lights, however, if the use of these lights continues, hefty fines could be issued.

In terms of the National Road Traffic Act, LED light bars and spotlights are not permitted – not when it is covered, and even when it’s not connected. It is strictly against the law. The reason being is that these lights are dangerous and the use of it, can lead to a serious accident.

According to the Automobile Association (AA), certain mounted lights may only be used by those authorised to do so, including emergency personnel and law enforcement officials.

These include green, blue and yellow lights that may only be utilised by security practitioners, traffic law enforcers, police, military, towing services, disaster management officials, emergency health practitioners and professional hunters as well as those who transport visitors around national parks and game reserves.

LED bars/lights on vehicles are classified as a diode, not as light bulbs. Only factory fitted LED headlights are allowed, which would comply with the SABS specifications.
