Locals wash tekkies to raise funds

STEELPOORT – A group of six youths from the villages of Phasha, Mampuru and Stocking are specialising in a unique trade. The Green Bag Concepts group are washing tekkies in their neighbourhood.
According to Thabiso Mohlala, a member of Green Bag, they are doing the washing to generate money for a Mother’s Day event on May 11.
“We are known in the Steelpoort area. Those who have dirty sneakers visit us more often and we charge R20 for washing an adult’s pair and R10 for kids’ shoes.
“Generating cash for the event was a hassle, so we thought about this idea of washing shoes,” he added.
Mohlala told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that the idea came up after they realised that most of their peers avoided washing tekkies.
“People are too busy and some are lazy to do this, but here we are doing it for you, for just a mere R20.”
He said they have washed hundreds of shoes since they started the project last month. Group members each donated R50 towards buying the first batch of cleaning materials.
