Group calls for the removal of Voortrekker Street and its monument
The name arguably still leaves high traces of colonialism and apartheid reigning in the town and, as a result, fuels the white supremacy tendencies in the everyday lives of our people.

LYDENBURG – “It is now an open card (sic) that the people of Mashishing in your municipality are screaming and kicking about the removal of the Voortrekker Street name and its monument in town.”
A letter for request of intervention addressed to the executive mayor of Thaba Chweu Local Municipality (TCLM), Fridah Nkadimeng written by Mandla Martin Mohlala, states that not only him, but apparently the residents in Mashishing, are calling for the disposal of the street name and the small Voortrekker monument dating back to 1938 in front of Lydenburg Post Office.
Addressing Nkadimeng, Mohlala said, “The name arguably still leaves high traces of colonialism and apartheid reigning in the town and, as a result, fuels the white supremacy tendencies in the everyday lives of our people.”
