Spring load-shedding possibly on the forefront

Even a 0.1 per cent rise in the gross domestic product could result in outages.

LYDENBURG – Although winter went without any hiccups or load-shedding schedules, a possible Spring-shed could be on the forefront.

Nelisiwe Magubane, an Eskom board member said at an event on Wednesday by Afriforesight in Johannesburg that; “The energy availability of Eskom’s generation fleet is supposed to be as high as 80 per cent, but that it is currently as low as 69 per cent, and even a 0.1 per cent rise in gross domestic product could result in outages. ”

Eskom, which supplies about all of South Africa’s power, is crippled by debt and relies solidly on government bailouts to remain operational.

Most of Eskom’s existing power stations are reaching the end of its energy supply with no or little maintenance. Two new plants are running behind schedule and have not been commissioned.
