CPF and SAPS track down suspects

At the corner of Voortrekker and de Klerk, the suspects crashed into a traffic light.

LYDENBURG – The local SAPS and CPF sector 2 made a huge break-through when they arrested two fleeing criminals on Tuesday night just after 23:00.

According to Capt. Alfred Moela, SAPS spokesperson, a lookout was given for a stolen silver Toyota Hilux single cab bakkie. The bakkie was stolen at Acornhoek and was presumably making its way to Lydenburg.

On the R36/Ohrigstad road, the suspects pulled off next to a broken down Isuzu bakkie with the premeditated purpose of offering “help” to the stranded driver and passengers.  The suspects then robbed the occupants at gunpoint of cash, two cellphones, their wallets, a car radio and speakers before speeding off to town.

CPF members on patrol spotted the suspects and bakkie and immediately called for SAPS assistance. CPF members and the SAPS gave chase after the suspects in the direction of Mashishing. At the corner of Voortrekker and de Klerk, the suspects crashed into a traffic light.

They tried to get away on foot, dropping the firearm near the bakkie. CPF members and officers immediately gave chase and the two were arrested. The suspects remain in police custody until their court appearance on Friday. They have been charged with the possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition and motor vehicle theft.
