LMBC #GreenDay
Last week Thursday, residents of the town, Mashishing, Extension 2 and Skhila could experience a glimpse of how it would be to live in a rubbish and waste-free town.
Businesses, individuals, organisations and schools joined hands in the Lydenburg/Mashishing Business Chamber’s P.R.I.D.E Green Day cleaning campaign in an effort to curb the littering in these suburbs and to prove that, by working together, all can have a cleaner environment.
According to Etli van der Merwe, initiator of the P.R.I.D.E. project in town, this second cleaning-up campaign was a great success. More businesses, residents, schools as well as the Thaba Chweu Local Municipality joined the campaign.
“This year it was much bigger and better,” said Van der Merwe.
Various businesses offered to clean up at certain places they identified. Residents of Wenakker cleaned up in Buhrmann Street while pupils of Hoërskool Lydenburg, Entheos Christian School, Lydenburg Primary School in Mashishing and homeschooled pupils also supported the campaign.
“At the Ohrigstad entrance of the town we picked up dumped rubbish like nappies, used condoms and empty beer bottles.”People who dump their rubbish can be identified by the contents of these bags,” warned Van der Merwe.”Everybody had a positive attitude, but was appalled by all the littering and dumping in town.”We call on the community to be more aware of littering and dumping. It was such a great day that we are considering we do it a few times a year, maybe the beginning of December, to ensure that our town will be cleaner and more attractive to tourists during the holiday season.”
