Bank strike; Union warns to have cash available
Speaking to SABC, the union says it will ensure that ATMs and banking operations are not functional.

LYDENBURG – About 40 000 members of the financial industry is set to embark on a national banking strike this Friday.
While the major banks in the country insisted and indicated that all will be well, the South African Society of Bank Officials (SASBO) has since said that provision should be made to have cash handy.
Protest marches are planned for this coming Friday in several major cities, but it is still unclear how the union strike will affect rural towns like Lydenburg and Burgersfort.
The union said that they will apparently shut down systems on Friday making all transactions impossible. The protest action has also received support from trade union Cosatu, which may see the numbers swell.
Speaking to SABC, the union says it will ensure that ATMs and banking operations are not functional.
SASBO’s General Secretary Joe Kokela told the SABC on Monday; “We will continue with the strike on Friday. South Africans need to know what is happening at the banks, how employees are being treated. We will make sure that ATMs don’t operate. We will make sure that internet banking service is not working.”
