The previous record was 57 000 in the USA.  Sandwiches were made at 41 locations across South Africa in attempt to encourage the country’s businesses to raise awareness regarding global food issues.

Riverview Prep School provided the venue. Volunteers from RCL FOODS and the Do More Foundation as well as parents, staff and children from Riverview had one hour to spread and package as many sandwiches as they could.

A total of 7 348 sandwiches were prepared in the school’s hall which contributed to breaking the world record. Volunteers were chasing the clock with sandwiches to be counted, stickers to be places on packets, spreading and putting them into bags before 11:00.

The sandwiches were distributed among schools, home-based caretakers, disabled centres and early childhood development centres.
