Lanies culture day loads of fun

A few learners per class dressed in their traditional attire to show how creative they were

As a last fund-raising project for 2019, Laerskool Malelane had a cultural day at school, where all the Lanie learners dressed according to their own culture, or to a culture they admire and respect. Four or five learners per class took part in a fashion show to display their traditional attire and show how enthusiastic and creative they all were.

Each class had the opportunity to sing and dance along to a typical South African song, and it was wonderful to see how proud everyone was of their heritage and culture. Francois Rossouw and Angelique James joined the grade 6E class in a Swazi traditional dance, wearing Swazi attire. The foundation phase teachers all dressed as Afrikaanse Boere-tannies, with their hats and aprons. Khomotso Raselabe was nominated as the best dressed teacher for her classy African dress.

After the cultural activities, the children participated in sporting activities at eight different stations, which included a giant slide, roller balls, a go-cart race, a wheelbarrow race and variations on soccer, hockey, cricket and netball.
Part of this fund-raising project was an opportunity for the learners to be able to act as principal for a day. They had to complete an official tender form and make suggestions of a theme for the day, as well as on activities they would like to have presented at school.

Ten pupils suggested a South African culture day, but Kaylee Smith, a grade 4A pupil, handed in the most detailed tender. She was chosen as the winner and was appointed principal for the day.

The other nine pupils who suggested the same theme were appointed as Kaylee’s management team. These learners had the responsibility to choose the winners of the best dressed awards and they also decided which classes displayed the best spirit. They spent some time in the real principal’s office, where they enjoyed juice and had an in-depth conversation about school management. They also had the privilege of handing out prizes and coloured powder paint for all the Lanies to enjoy.

The school would like to thank Debonairs Malalane for their sponsorship. Patel’s Hardware and Lowmed Ambulance Services also supported this event and the school appreciated this.
They would also like to thank all the Lanie parents who have helped with managing the different sporting activities, and all the Lanie pupils and teachers who participated with enthusiasm and positivity.
