Bass competition hosted at Driekoppies

Windy conditions does not stop anglers in big bass war

This year’s South African Bass Angling Association Team Tournament Trail was hosted by the Lowveld Bass Trail at Driekoppies Dam, in combination with Laeveld Agrochem Nelspruit as key sponsor, last weekend.
On day one anglers were greeted with strong to moderate windy conditions, which picked up later in the morning and continued to give them a few challenges, as well as the team skippers handling the water conditions.
A few good fish were caught by the defending Ebass trail. Not standing back at all, the LBT members fought back, with decent size bags being weighed in.

Day two saw a calmer yet light breeze after the light rain during the evening. The blast-off went well, being based on team positions for day one. Conditions had changed somewhat and teams needed to change strategy to get their bags full.

Day two was tougher than day one, as it normally is, due to water being pressurised from all the boats and anglers. Bites were few and far between.
At midday the fishing picked up again near cut-off time and teams started to fish harder and faster, as could be seen by boats running up and down.

Day two, however, also saw the cut-off time moved to an hour earlier, so the boats started pulling in to the weigh-in station.

The prize-giving was held at Malelane Golf Club and followed by a gala dinner. The Ebass team took top honours by defending their reign and taking the Team Trail Champions title for the third time in a row. The LBT team came second by the smallest of margins.

LBT saw eight of their teams ending in the top 20 teams in the country, with Team Thermocline in third position. This achievement will see the team, Herman Geldenhuys and William Myers, attending Bassmaster Team Championships in the USA towards the end of next year.

The team winners from last year, brothers Frank and Ben Gottschalk, will leave early December to attend this year’s Bassmaster Team Championships held at Lake Hartwell, USA.
We wish them all the best and know they will make the Lowveld proud.
Last but certainly not least, a big shout-out was given to all the sponsors. Two highlighted were Laeveld Agrochem Nelspruit and Charl Carey for all his generous sponsorship, time, dedication and passion for the sport of bass angling in South Africa.

Toyota Malalane were also acknowledged, as they did not just sponsor but also ensured security guards and portable toilets at the dam venue from early Thursday morning throughout the weekend.
As mentioned on the SABAA Facebook page, the 2019 Laeveld Agrochem Nelspruit SABAA Team Super Final was the flagship of all Super Finals held to date.
