Nine illegal miners arrested in Apel
The operation was conducted throughout the night and at about 04:00, the police managed to apprehend nine suspects at Atok village and confiscated four excavators, two LDVs and a sedan to the estimated value of R6 million.
APEL – Members of the Provincial Organised Crime Unit conducted an operation in the Apel policing area on Tuesday in a bid to root out illegal mining activities that are prevalent in this part of the province.

The operation was conducted throughout the night and at about 04:00, the police managed to apprehend nine suspects at Atok village and confiscated four excavators, two LDVs and a sedan to the estimated value of R6 million.

The information that was received about these illegal activities, was operationalized and it led the members to these suspects operating at a mine situated at Atok.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Limpopo Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba, has applauded the members for their sterling investigations which led to the arrest of these alleged illegal miners.

The suspects, aged between 21 and 55 are all expected to appear before the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s court soon. Police investigations are still continuing.
