Meet Miss Lydenburg 2019

Getting the opportunity to travel and visit places outside the continent, as well as to meet various role models, are some of the dreams Miss Lydenburg 2019 would like to realise.

By winning this coveted title, Machacha Lekgetho (20) said she is now ready to enter Miss Mpumalanga next year.

Machacha was born in Tlhabane, Rustenburg on December 30, 1999, and currently lives in Mashishing. She is a grade 11 pupil at the Leersentrum Private School in Lydenburg and the youngest of three siblings, Tracy (26), Lesley (23) and Seipei (21).

According to her, she entered the Miss Lydenburg beauty pageant to be recognised and to be the voice of the voiceless. Before being crowned Miss Lydenburg 2019 on October 12, she also scooped the titles Miss Valentine’s Day and Miss Skhila Secondary School in 2018.

Her modelling career started at the age of nine while she was living in Polokwane, where she also obtained a qualification in modelling at I Model Management.

At the time of winning the title, Machacha played an important role in her community, where she was active in various community projects like supporting the elderly people at the Rusoord Old Age Home, giving modelling lessons to pre-primary school kids at Krappies and Krefies, as well as being invited to be the maid of honour at prize-giving ceremonies for Lydenburg Primary and Classic Daycare where she handed out awards. Machacha got involved in cleaning up the town alongside workers of EPWP, and helped with filing records of patients at Mashishing Clinic. She also attended the Zazi Girls Camp where she was assisted a lot on her way becoming Miss Lydenburg.

Her greatest goal is to start a wellness programme to assist the community of Mashishing in an effort to curb alcohol, drugs and teenage pregnancy.

She wants to be a flight assistant to travel around the world, but she admits that she fears heights and injections.

It was second time lucky for Machacha. She entered the Miss Lydenburg competition in 2018 and ended up as a semi-finalist. This year she walked away with the crown.

I was overwhelmed when I was announced as the winner. I always wanted to be recognised and it means that I can change other young peoples’ visions and lives in this community that is drowning in substance abuse, the growing rate of teenage pregnancy, and the decreasing number of young people who are not testing for HIV and Aids.

Among the prizes she won for being Miss Lydenburg 2019 is a laptop, a R500 beauty voucher at Amanda Makeup Artist and a night at De Ark Guest House.

Her advice to young women who want to enter Miss Lydenburg is to believe in themselves, never give up, and never be discouraged by their backgrounds and financial status from achieving their dreams.
